Growing up my grandfather said you should always ask for what you want. When I said, “you don’t think they’ll say no?” He replied, “what are they going to do? They’re not gonna shoot me! The worst is they’ll say no!” It stuck with me and I’ve never been afraid to politely “just ask”. Sure, I get plenty of sidestepping or “no” responses, but you know what? I also get a lot of yes responses. And more than that people typically feel good about helping me out! Top performing sales people in every business know this and they overcome the awkwardness of just asking for business and referrals. In fact most top producers never stop asking. And they ask every one all the time.
One of my business partners, Brenda, tells a great story of a time she and some friends were leaving a concert and as the crowd exited down the sidewalk a guy yelled, “hey baby, hey baby, hey baby, hey baby!” to every woman exiting. Intrigued by this, she walked over to the guy and asked him, “does this ever actually work?” His reply: “not much but I only need one yes per night to have a date and I usually get one if I ask enough women walking by.”
My grandpa Seymour and the “hey baby” guy both understood that consistently and persistently just asking yields results. And they celebrated every no response, realizing with each no they got closer to a yes.
So if you want to increase your business start asking everyone. They won’t shoot you. Ask every client, every listing agent, buyers agent, title agent, insurance agent, attorney, financial planner, past client, friends and family who they know that’s looking to buy, sell or refinance soon.
If you believe you’re offering a great service and helping folks improve their lives you should find it an obligation to offer that life-changing service to everyone you can, right?
Just remember what grandpa Seymour and the hey baby guy knew and JUST ASK! The more you do it the more business you’ll have!
